SUMMARY

I trained under the ICE agreement at Babtie Group Ltd and gained a breadth of experience in Civil, Structural, and Geotechnical Engineering, with my chosen specialisation being Geotechnical Engineering. I was a key member of the team that investigated the cause of the 1992 Deighton Sludge Lagoon major failure. Whilst at Babtie Group, I was part of the design team responsible for the new tidal defences on the River Severn, which involved the relatively new technique of soil reinforcement using polymer geosynthetics. This interest in soil reinforcement led me to join Tensar International Ltd, who were at the forefront of innovation, testing, and the development of design principles. Over a period of 11 years, I was instrumental in promoting a wider understanding and acceptance of soil reinforcement within the civil and geotechnical industries, both in the UK and overseas.

I returned to Civil Engineering as an Associate Director at PSA Consultants, where I was responsible for the delivery of external works including road and drainage design. One notable project involved the external works for a new ASDA store, which required the design and construction of a 30m high earth retaining structure on the site of an old railway cutting, utilising on-site recycled materials.

In 2006, I co-founded P&S Consulting Engineers Ltd (PaSCoE) which offered a broad range of Civil, Structural, and Geotechnical Design Services for both Temporary and Permanent Works. I adopted a hands-on approach to running the consultancy and undertook project designs, including structures, ground modelling, road layout design, ground investigation, geotechnical interpretation, material suitability, earthworks, foundations, retaining structures, settlement analysis, risk analysis, and reporting. I’m incredibly proud of what we achieved, and equally proud of the team who continue to lead with technical excellence, professionalism, and diligence.

In 2026, after 20years at PaSCoE, I decided it was time to return to my primary interest in all things geotechnical. My main focus is around drawing on my extensive civil and geotechnical design experience to provide design assurance through design reviews, independent checking, and validation services.

I maintain an interest in reinforced soil and have designed some of the largest reinforced soil structures in the UK, including the 35m high Midland Quarry embankment, which reached the final of the Ground Engineering Awards and won the ICE West Midlands Awards. Projects in which I have played a major contributing role have reached the final of the GE Awards on five occasions, winning twice.

I have acted as Contractor’s Responsible Engineer (CRE) on a large range of Network Rail schemes, including Petts Hill Rail Bridge, Bracknell Station, Tanners Hill Station, Vauxhall Station, Thameslink, Crossrail, HS2, Eltham Embankment Stabilisation, London Road Bridge Hackbridge, and Bookham Junction.

I have also undertaken the design of numerous water-related projects for United Utilities and Yorkshire Water, including dam stability assessments, spillway reconstructions, pipeline design, river reinstatement works, bridge design, culvert design, drainage design, embankment dam stabilisation works, retaining wall design, and access road design.

NOTABLE RECENT GEOTECHNCIAL PROJECTS

2024

Carlisle Southern Link Road, Cumbria                                           Lead reinforced soil wall designer

Design of 36No reinforced soil wingwalls to new reinforced concrete bridges for both ULS and SLS. The majority of the RC bridges are integral structures which required close collaboration with the wider geotechnical and structures teams to ensure robust integration between the various structural elements. The wingwalls are up to 11m high which presented issues relating to bearing capacity and the effects of settlement on the adjacent bridge abutments. One bridge carries traffic over the West Coast Mainline with the bridge beams being lifted in using a 1850tonne crane located above the reinforced soil walls. Due to site constraints a 5m high temporary reinforced soil wall was required above the wingwalls resulting in a structure height of 15m.

Old Tram Bridge Replacement, Lancashire                                   Lead temporary works designer

To access the bridge location required the construction of a 2.5km haul road. The haul road passed over existing services, culverts, and watercourses which required the design of suitable protection and support measures. The majority of the haul road was supported on existing historic railway embankments. Condition assessments and targeted ground investigation was undertaken to enable stability assessment to be undertaken to ensure the embankments were capable of supporting the site traffic and allow for crane access. Part of the solution entailed the use of geocells to control the lateral shear stresses along the crest of the embankments.

Angmering Bypass, West Sussex                                                       Lead geotechnical designer

To facilitate the widening of the existing highway an existing box culvert needed to be extended. The design of the culvert was accompanied by the design of reinforced concrete, gravity, and sheet pile retaining walls, together to slope stability assessment and earthworks specifications.

2023

Holme Styes Impounding Reservoir, West Yorkshire                   Lead designer

An embankment dam stability assessment undertaken by Yorkshire Water had revealed a relatively low factor of safety. The remedial works design included the design of the dam stabilisation measures using a slackened slope, the temporary dam stability during construction, the specification and detailing of the earthworks materials, a new drainage system, an extension of the existing tunnel beneath the embankment dam, and upgrading of the overflow channel and access steelwork.

Silsden Impounding Reservoir, West Yorkshire                            Lead designer

Design of new permanent reinforced concrete spillway channel, tumblebay apron, and reinforced concrete retaining walls within the existing spillway channel including anti flotation measures. Temporary works included dam stability assessments, plant stability, and crane platforms.

2022

Preston Western Bypass, Lancashire                                               Lead temporary works designer for Savick Brook Bridge

Design of targeted ground investigation and strength profiling of very weak tidal flat deposits at Savick Brook Bridge to facilitate the design of ‘floating’ roads, working platforms, and SPMT drive paths to position and lift the steel bridge beams. Design of Gantry Crane reinforced concrete spread foundations, sheet pile retaining wall, and service protection measures.

Chesterton Bridge, Cambridgeshire                                                 CRE (Design)

Temporary works design associated with the construction of a new bridge across the River Cam adjacent to Network Rail assets including piling platforms, embedded retaining wall, piled crane outrigger supports, band drain rig support, drainage, excavation support, formwork, and railway embankment stability assessments.

2021

Yeadon Way, Lancashire                                                                     Lead designer

Design of remedial works to existing elevated highway constructed on an old railway embankment. Design works included embankment stability analysis, reinforced soil embankments, bridge assessments, pavement design, and lighting column foundations.

Manston Lane Link Road, West Yorkshire                                      Lead reinforced soil wall designer

Design of hydrid reinforced concrete/reinforced soil wingwalls to pre-cast concrete abutment/bridge structure using high strength geosynthetic straps. Design of 8m high reinforced soil approach embankments and geocell erosion control measures. Provision of earthworks materials and testing specification.

2020

Infrastructure Recovery Programme, Cumbria                             Lead designer

Design and Geotechnical Certification of a number of assets damaged during a sever flood event including: a sheet pile retaining wall to repair failed embankment adjacent to a masonry bridge structure at Rumbling Bridge; a contiguous bored pile retaining wall to repair a failed embankment and support existing road alongside the River Waver at Parsonbridge; remedial works design of a 15m high failed embankment alongside the River Thrushgill at Grayrigg; 3No culvert replacements to increase the capacity of Finsthwaite Beck and prevent flooding of the carriageway at Finsthwaite.

A45 Daventry Link Road, West Northamptonshire                      Sub-consultant to WSP for reinforced soil wall design

Design of 6No reinforced soil bridge abutments and associated wingwalls to new semi-integral bridges supported on RC bankseats founded on the reinforced soil together with assessments of strain ratcheting and integration with the structures. Design of reinforced soil walls with RC columns penetrating the reinforced soil to support bridges over the East Coast Main Line and Grand Union Canal.
